Put in this recipe insted of coffee? It's a chocolate cake recipe and you are supposed to melt the chocolate chips in coffee, but I don't really like coffee and I'm afraid that the cake will be overwelmed by the coffee flavor. Any suggestions?

Use hot water water with a little vanilla extract added to it. The chips will melt and you will get a nice slight vanilla flavoring. If you don't like vanilla, you can add some grated orange peel.

Well, I'd say you have two options:

use very little coffee (I assume since you don't like coffee, you'd have instant), say a half teaspoon instead of of a teaspoon per cup

Or, if the purpose is just to melt the chocolate chips in hot liquid, use hot water.

The coffee part should just be flavoring but you might need the liquid part-- without seeing the recipe I wouldn't venture a guess.

And I agree-- catsrule!

Don't be afraid of chocolate recipes that call for a little bit of coffee. If it is just a couple of tablespoons of liquid coffee it really enhances the flavor of the chocolate and you won't taste the coffee at all.

If you are really worried about the coffee you could use just water. Milk or cream could also be substitutes as could a liqueur like amaretto, frangelico or grand marnier.

If the purpose is to dissolve the chocolate chips, then why not some milk instead of coffee.

how about using a metal bowl placed over a pot of water to melt the chips in? and then you can omit the coffee all together.

I like to experiment. I would use ovaltine instead of the coffee. Ovaltine has the same consistancy of coffee. Whatever the recipe says for the coffee, do the same thing with the ovaltine. Let me know how it turns out if you decide to use my suggestion. Marlene.
