As was stated Oxycontin is a time released medication that can last anywhere from 8-12 hours. It is used for the management of long term chronic pain.

Oxycodone is a short acting medication that last anywhere from 3 -6 hours. It is used for the management of short term acute pain.

They are the same medicine. The only difference is that oxycontin is a sustained release formulation which means that you get a constant supply of the medicine throughout the day.
