Here's what happens when you back up your data, on systems by HP, Compaq, & Sony... there may be others that use this method, but I can say for certain of these companies...
When you backup your system, they use what's known as "ghosting" to take a sort of "snapshot" of your hdd (hard drive), and put that information on a CD... but all your Gigs of data are NOT on that CD... they're actually stored on a hidden portion of your hard drive... so that (let's say for example) 120Gb hard drive you have, only shows 100Gb... that's why, 20Gb has your system stuff on it, and it's hidden from your view, and used to restore your system to its' "original state" as you got it from the store, preloaded with all the OS & applications.
Anything you do on your PC, you need to save... in Real Estate, the motto is Location, Location, Location (three most important elements in selling property)... in computers it's Backup, Backup, Backup!
Not only do I have two copies of all my application software on CDs, but I store multiple copies files (documents, etc) and make copies of my favs folders, etc to flash drives, my pocket pc, etc.
Recenlty, when my g/f decided she'd be funny and turn off the pc while I was using it... it ended up ruining the XP registry, and I had to reload Windows... well, due to backup, I only lost 4 document files (which I later found that I had copies of), while she lost several hundred! and she didn't back them up... so, while I spent hours, reconstructing the hard drive, she will never again see those photos & files she's lost... and maybe think twice about playing like that again.
Oh, and speaking of Ghosting, Norton sells (as to many others) ghosting programs that will also save your data... they generally cost about $9. You may be able to find some for free at www.download.com or http://download.zdnet.com If you're not too savvy with PCs, just spend a little time with them... they're not difficult, just time consuming to learn.
I hope I helped?
