TheL5 nerve root operates the muscle that pulls up the big toe. That makes weakness of this muscle evident when testing in this way. The S1 nerve runs the foot evertors, or peroneus longus muscle and tibialis posterior, the muscle that helps you toe walk. So weakness in these muscle groups can tell if that particular nerve root is being affected by the disc herniation.

I have herniation at L4L5, but I can walk on my toes. What is your question? I also have had 2 neck surgeries for herniation, those symptoms are different as well.
