Much better than it used to be. Like all towns there are good and bad areas. Southsea is good.
Note that it's on an island and there are three road access points and one railway line. Blockage of any of these causes big traffic problems. When roads and trains are working you have good access to most places,
It is much cleaner than dumps like Slough. As for crime you should look up "upmystreet.com" for comparisons with other places.
There is a super new development called Gunwharf Quays with cinema, shops, cafes, Spinnaker tower etc. This is near the Historic Dockyard (HMS Victory, HMS Warrior, Mary Rose etc).
A ferry across the harbour to Gosport gives you access to more shops, Lee on The Solent etc. There are ferries to the Isle of Wight (car, hovercraft, catamaran) as well as France and Spain.
Do not get involved with football morons or their idiotic rantings. There is some brain-dead rivalry between prats who use Portsmouth and Southampton football games as an excuse to show how much of a waste of oxygen they are (real supporters don't get drunk and fight).

I would not like to live in Portsmouth but Southsea would be OK but it is very expensive. The rest of Portsmouth is filled with students and they are just annoying. Over the harbour is Gosport, where I live and that is much nicer, cheaper housing with a wide variety of styles. The Portsmouth area is much the same as any other city connurbation. Some good parts some bad. However; on a hot summer's evening there is nothing better than sitting at the bars watching sunset and catching the sea breeze. The football is excellent - if you can get a ticket, unlike the supporters down the road it is premiership football and it sells out quickly. Shopping is good and transport links to continent and rest of UK make it a fair place to settle. Some areas have high crime and some areas are dirtier than others. Sea Water quality is good and we have many blue flag beaches in this part of the world.

It depends where in Portsmouth you are thinking of. If it's Buckland, North End, Copnor then don't even bother. However I used to live in Southsea and being right by the seafront is so cool. You want to look at Old Portsmouth too, that's lovely and some of the new apartments around the Gunwharf are lovely. Don't be too quick to diss it. As with every other city in the world, it has it's good parts and bad parts. I grew up there and have some fond memories. But make sure that you are by the beach and not in town at all. Also Fratton is student city. However some of the older houses are beautiful, if you can find one that has not been converted into flats you'll have a wonderful house.

Its a total shithole. I wouldnt want to go near it let alone live there. The football ground just about sums up the whole town - crappest in the country. And they all reek of fish. But then I'm a saints fan so what do you expect me to say?!

It's a dump. Seriously. Do not go there except to get on a ferry to France.

It's nice but not exciting.
