If a person has been depressed for a long time (more than 5 years), do you think it's normal or abnormal for that person to think about suicide? I don't mean plans or intent, simply thoughts.

actually, suicidal thoughts are very common, MANY people have these thoughts without intent. but for the person with continued depression it could be dangerous to have these types of thoughts, and anyone who has been in a state of depression for many years should seek professional help, because continued depression is NOT normal

A question of normal or abnormal isnt really relivant. Feeling depression is something that every human being goes through at one point or another. Long term depression needs to be attended to or will become fatal. I use fatal to describe the condition because that is what suicidal thoughts can be to a person. When depression gets worse and worse with no sign of feeling better, thats when suicide enters the mind. Its almost like you have been injected, with a drug that gives you the scariest high. Feeling numb and dead inside. You can only deal with it for so long. Suicide lingers in the mind, yes just thoughts of it. It rents a space thereafter in your mind then eventually owns a part of you. Soon its an obsession, and it seems to be the solution for every problem. Hence the description of a fatal circumstance. Anyone with depression for more than a week has to be diagnosed and treated accordingly. Suicide is scary and has taken so many precious lives and wheather it is normal or abnormal is neither here nor there, it just is and it needs to be dealt with in any form it is felt. Thoughts, plans, intentions... Remember thoughts that are repetative create themselves eventually, suicide is real, and any thoughts or feelings that erupt from depression making thoughts of suicide may take another life and are nothing to dismiss...

I don't know how the word "normal" fits, but people who have depression often think of suicide; it's considered one of the classic symptoms. That doesn't mean everybody who's depressed thinks of suicide--because people aren't exactly the same and depressed people don't necessarily have all the same symptoms. If the person says they have suicidal thoughts, then the doctor will ask if the person has a specific plan of how to commit suicide. I work in mental health and I have been treated for depression for 20 years or so.

Yeah well...ive been there, i have my scars and i know its not a nice place to be. When i was at my lowest point the thought of suicide was my way out. I thought that if things got any worse i had the option of just ending it all. I'm still not 100% today but i've had to realise that everyone has a reason to live no matter who they are or what they do. This is something you can't be told by anyone else though, you have to realise this for yourself. So i would have to say yes, its normal to have those thoughts as long as they stay just thoughts. When those thoughts become ideas you need to do some soul-searching and find a reason to go on. One thing i realised is that things are never that bad. :)

Yes, the frustration of feeling depressed can make one question the meaning of life. This is a normal thought as you are more sensitive and in touch with your emotions.

However, if the thoughts include ways of doing it then I would strongly advise to go and see a doctor urgently.

There IS a cure for depression. for someone that has been depressed for 5 years it might not look that way but that is only because the person is closed and unable to see beyond their current state of mind.

I'd defy anyone who has suffered from depression for a long period of time not to think suicidal thoughts. Plans and intent are a different thing altogether and this is whats not normal.

It is very important to have someone to talk to. Try a counselor or if you are comfortable, try talking to a doctor, even if it is at one of those 7 day a week clinics. There are medications that they can put you on to help your depression, but being able to find someone to talk to will be most helpful. Depression is a difficult thing to overcome, and you can't do it without help, find someone to talk to, that you can trust, and see what a difference it can make. Taking your own life won't solve anything, you won't give yourself a chance to get better. And then the people who love you, might fall into the same situation you are in now. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

it is very common (I won't say "normal" because that doesn't exhist when you talk about psycology) to have thoughts of suicide when one is depressed. It's is not however, common for someone to be depressed for more than a couple of months. They need to figure out what it is that's bothering them, or come out of denial about what's bothering them and take care of the situation. Or get some professional help.

keep in mind, that someone who thinks about killing themselves, might just try it.

Thoughts of suicide are in fact a symptom of deep depression. The person just wants to end with what he/she considers the "agony". There are great medical treatments nowadays for this.

depressed person doesn't see anything nice and good in this world,so it's not worth living...it's a common reaction for depression,but for sure somewhere there is a help for that person( by friends,family support,different natural things as tie for relaxation and pills consist of a lot of healthy plants,hospitals...)Life is just one and we shouldn't waste it on suicidal thoughts!!!
