Threre are two types of dangers that TV poses. The first one, is obviously, inappropriate programs (too violent often). But most parents are responsible in this respect. The second danger -- even with sweet and innocent shows, you still end up with kids that don't know how to entertain themselves. They are used to having constant stimulation and can't sit still when you read them a story. They don't have to stretch their imaginations very far, because TV does it for them.
That said, you can simply limit their TV watching (or make them go cold turkey), but you'll have to work with them. If the TV has been keeping them occupied, freeing you up for other activities, you'll now have to supervise their other activites. But it's worth it! Eventually, they'll figure out fun games to play on their own. Consider this an investment. I don't know how old your kids are, but get crafts, games, puzzles for them and you to do. They will complain at first, but will have fun doing something else. Go outside for a walk. Take "treasure" bags with you and collect interesting things that you find. A neat leaf, a smooth stone, an old penny -- anything.
Use paper mache. Mix flour and water to a paste and you have paper mache. Make treasure boxes with paper mache. Make a pinata by putting paper mache on the outside of a balloon. Leave a small hole at the end for you put the treasures inside. Let it dry, and paint it if you want. Fill it up, and close it up with tape or more paper mache. Voila!
Good luck. It really is fun, and it's wonderful when you finally see your kids having fun together without having to be sitting in front of TV!

Believe me, I have three boys who are addicted to cartoons and video games. After a few weeks of detox they actually are doing better in school and are reading!
Your child(ren) will be fine, limit their time and what they watch.
You'll see a great inprovement after a few short months.
But, you should know that it means listening to them whine they are board, often. That means you need to entertain them alot more. Find things to do as a family and u will love the relationship change between you and them.

Set a certain time for them to watch; like - no TV on school days but only on weekends; and stick strictly to that rule.
