Being that I'm from North America and have been to every Derby and Breeders Cup since 2000, I should be inclined to pick one or the other. Derby day is awesome and the atmosphere is great there.
However, those days don't have the effect on the nation like the Melborne Cup does in Australia. The whole country shuts down the day of the race, they get more North American stars down there to promote it than they do here for the Derby. The race also has one of the best fields put together for it as well.
Honorable mention goes out to the Royal Ascot meet in England which I hope to attend for the first time this summer, and the Arc de Triomphe in France, and the Dubai world Cup on my list to attend for next year.

The largest single interest in horse racing worldwide are the oil sheiks in the middle east, they have been trying to buy a derby winner for some time now and have bought to the point where they bought last years breeders cup classic here in America(first two finishers were owned by people in the same family)...the soon to be 7 million dollar race they hold in Dubai is a perfect example of how it works for them...a truly great horse(or one with great potential who is peaking) will tilt an owner and trainers thinking that they could ship in and take a purse like that and a few other grade one wins could help expand their horse's breeding value many times...so for me there is that race, then of course in Europe and America they have 'triple crowns' where the top 3 year olds in training compete in a series of 3 races that are run over a short period of time (where if you are even marginally successful you multiply your horses value many times over) , very tough on young horses and since we have very few 'great' young horses, there hasn't been a triple crown winner in a long time and only a few in the last 35 years(so how valuable now is secretariats triple crown wins which were all track/stake records?some that still stand today, that 31 length win...yikes)...personally I like when a older horse gets good, because some 3 year olds never run good in their 4th year and beyond, that and some horses successful at 3 retire early so as not to hurt their breeding value...

I love Belmont Stakes, and the Kentucky Derby is of course very popular. Some of the most popular world-wide races are probably the Egyptian Arabian races across the eastern deserts, where sheiks race for days on end in the blistering heat. pretty cool, huh?
some other sweet races are the breeders cup and grand nationals.

Most people would say the Kentucky Derby. But you can't forget about Thoroughbred Racing's Championship Day The Breeders Cup. I think the Breeders Cup Classic would be a close second to the Derby.

definety Breeders Cup because the thought of who is going to win it is great thrill about it but not the Grand Nationals in the UK because there are horses and jockeys that get killed falling over those jumps......not unless you like to see death, blood, broken legs, broken necks, broken spinal cords...... Then the GRAND NATIONALS ARE NOT THE THING FOR YOU go on google and watch the video The Dark Side Of Horse Racing you'll see

I would say the last race on breeders cup day, which is usualy held in late october or early november , next would be the kuntucky derby. without a doubt the most exciting day in racing is the breeders cup day, followed by the kentuky derby. lol :)
