Linux of course. It is open source, allowing us to customize it to our own uses, languages and preferences without being held hostage by any one company. We have an abundance of skilled programmers and It workers who can take advantage of the open source nature of the OS.
Linux is free, which eans that anyone can use it without being held down to a EULA and we won't depend on making illegal copies of Windows anymore. Speaking of the desktop, Linux has come so far as to be virtually on par with Windows as long as the stricter hardware requirements are met to allow it to run.
Being free and open will put Indian developers in charge of the add-on programs in a way that a clsoed operating system could never allow.
P.S. This does not apply only to Indians, but since you made the question India-specific, the answer still holds. :)

Indian software developers are both numerous and skilled; open source software will (and in fact yet is) the best way to gratify their expertise and creativity, while closed source software could put too much limits in "what-I'd-like-to-do/what-I'm- actually - allowed-to-do" issue.
India is a really big Country whit many different local dialects and million of people getting richer and with a ever growing level of education, but still more can count on poor income and trouble in attending at school at least regularly.
So, for India even more than for other Countries in the world, "localization" (both referring to language availability and cultural takes) is even more important and by this point of view open source software is way ahead than closed source'. Linux support for language, including dialects is way better (and larger!) than Microsoft's.
And when all did in competent and proper way (so NOT Birmingham way) not only the lower cost of software itself but the high level of customization and language localization and local support make Linux the best choice for Indian users and firms.
Even more for new user or newborn firms which can start from Linux with no need for "migration" from Windows system and related possible issues.
India will likable be the core of open source developing (not only software but possibly open hardware as well) in the follwing years, so by choosing Linux India will become world leader in software industry.
Any Linux users, people, firms, government, will not be forced to entrust one specific company for technical support. And technical support choices will be based on effective tech abilities, not money power.

Linux- Mandriva Linux better one for desktop users. It has all features that a windows xp has, if we install certain packages then it'll have all features what vista has.
Also, these are more stable than others in my point, more secure for home desktop users.
or Slax a small operating system, for learners.
Cent, Fedora core for power users, that's for experts.
Also, these operating systems are free! Not more aware of this OS.

As in line with the provisions of the present structure of India, President has no self sufficient potential. He has to adhere to the advice of the Council of Ministers headed through the right Minister(paintings.seventy 4). In different words the workplace of President in India is more beneficial of decorative nature to approve the acts of the Parliament and the right Minister.

Although most of us Indians use WinXP for Home use but 90% use pirated versions that's because most of us cannot afford buying expensive OS.
As for Macintosh it can be bought only in dreams by a middle income man.
Not used SUN OS so can't say but read somewhere it is available for free download.
So, Linux could be a better choice
advantages:
It's cheap.
It's secure.
Open source so supports almost all hardware.
drawback:
Not easy to use (But remember, we Indians are Geeks) :)
