I guess I should start by asking what the differences are, and who Linux is better for. I just need an overall look at them both to see which one is right for me. Thanks!!

You really need to clarify what the computer will be used for? Will it be for business or personal use or both? Also, how computer savvy are you, are you an expert user or a novice?

Those answers from you would really help someone answer your question.

Since you didn't specify business I'm going to assume that you want this computer for personal use.

Here are a few pieces of comparison:

Cost: Linux is always going to be cheaper since the majority of the key software is either free or mostly free.

Ease of use: This depends on your level of computer expertise, but for 99% of people Windows is easier to use.

Software availability: This is a big one! Windows has hands down the most software available. You will probably have frequent issues with software availability or compatibility if you don't choose Windows.

My recommendation: I use Linux for my remotely hosted boxes and Windows for my personal use. I would recommend the same for you. Use Windows for your personal use and you will never have to worry about the software you want being usable on your system.

1) Linux is free, Windows isn't.
2) Linux does not have the research & resources behind it as Windows has, therefore Windows is more user-friendly & sophisticated till now.
3) To use Linux, it's better to know the basics of programming & a better-than rudimentary knowledge of computer jargon; but for Windows, you can start from scratch

Download one of the Live Linux flavors. I like and use http://www.PuppyLinux.org . It will give you a taste of Linux. The Live version are between 50 mbs and 150 mbs in size. they genrally can be ran from a CD in a RAM drive (256mb of RAM min.) making installation a non-issue. If you have a burner install on the computer any data created can be saved t disk elimitinationg the need for a hard drive.

Linux is better when you ask me, first it is free, second viruses cannot enter the system, and also it's open source. Windows on the other had needs to be purchased, is vulnerable to viruses and is close coded.
