As a semi-pro, i recomanded 2 brands for everyone. Nikon and Canon. Compare these 2, the quality of photos taken by these 2 brands r almost the same (pix, color, clear/sharpness n noise).
Let see from some different aspect : slim, i will go for casio n sony. More function, i choose panasonic. As for photo quality : Nikon n Canon.
If u wan a good and cheap compact camera : panasonic. But if u go for better quality: pls get Canon (I don't choose Nikon bcoz higher $$ compare to Canon n with same function and quality of pics.)

Myself, I prefer Sony.. Casio hasn't been making cameras as long as the other companies you have listed here. They were originally a watch company but they began making some pretty impressive digital watches back when digital watches were first created. I wouldn't say any one was better than the others. Go by the warranty, the features you are wanting, and price. They all make good cameras..

Canon.
Konica/Minolta is now defunct, with Sony taking Minolta's line of dSLR.
Panasonic, Casio, and Sony are not primarily camera manufacturers.
I would consider Canon, Olympus, Nikon, or Kodak if I were shopping for a consumer digicam.

Your sister is RIGHT. Listen to your sister and drop the idea of going for a Casio.
Out of the brand names you have mentioned, obviously CANON is preferable, because it has always made CAMERAS and LENSES. So naturally that company knows better how to make good cameras.
Another good Camera brand that has always made CAMERAS and CAMERA LENSES and is reputed for its excellent photographic equipment is NIKON.
My suggestion is to choose from one of these two brands, CANON and NIKON, and no other. Try out the models from these two brands depending on how much you want to spend. And choose the model which has all the features that you are looking for and is more reasonably priced.

As someone pointed out your sister is correct. You shouldn't go wrong in these brands: Sony, Canon, and don't forget Nikon and Fugi. If you were going to buy a digital single lens reflex camera then I'd narrow my choice down to Nikon and Canon; but if you're spending $350- or less you have lots to choose from , from the 4 brands i chose.

You're sister is correct. Casio is only for people who want thin cute cameras and not great quality photos.
CANON is the BEST. Check out their SD series. The SD600, SD630, and SD800IS are all great cameras. If those are out of your price range the A540 and A530 are great options (which use AA batteries, not a Li-ion rechargeable).
I've given links to Amazon. Any major retailer (Best Buy, etc.) should also carry them.

While I personally choose to use Nikon, I had bought an olympus for my wife. It all depends on what you are after.
It would be wise to list down things that are important to you, such as:
budget (usually most important)
function (eg. zoom)
design/form factor (slim vs bulkier model, compact vs DSLR)
memory card (MS, SD, CF, XD, etc)
country of manufacture
warranty
etc
Do some research and check out neutral review websites. I assume you are after a digital camera, and would recommend you visit: www.dpreview.com. The author is a widely recognise authority in digital camera reviews, and it's fairly graphic.
Be sure to shop around and compare prices. However, be aware of unscrupulous sales tactic, such as luring you in with a lower price for the model you asked for, and then once you're in the shop, the sales person will then highly recommend a "better" model. You would not be able to compare prices for this "better" model.

If you want to buy a digital camera, it's always best to go with a well known camera maker, eg; Olympus, Cannon etc. Casio make calculators and watches!

Canon all the way. Try out cameras at the store to see which is the easiest to use, this will help you decide.
