It was called the Great War because it was so great. It was called The War to end All Wars because afterwards there were no more wars.
Oh, wait.

All the countries after WWI created a Never again ethos and they figured that with all of the death and maiming that came with this war, no other wars would occur because it was too costly for both money and life. It was the great war, but this was the bloodiest battle and more lifes were lost then in another other war, which wasn't exactly true precentage wise, but entire generations of men were killed in the trenches and countries such as France, and Britain couldn't see another war that was this deadly. It could have possibly been that way too if it wasn't for that pesky "stab in the back" that many germans felt had occured.

Friedrich the Great had said that a nation at war should not notice that it was at war. Only with Napoleon did entire countries become involved directly with war-fighting, and nothing close to the scale of the Great War had ever been seen. Europe was more than decimated, and the great powers spent themselves to the edge of bankruptcy. It was inconcievable to most people that the world could ever willingly do such a thing again.

Because at the time, they didn't know there was going to be a Second World War, so they just called it the Great War.
They thought it would "end all wars" because it was such a fierce war that strained every country enormously to its limits. Nobody thought that countries could recover so quickly to fight yet another Great War. They were wrong.

Because up to that point in time, no other war that had been fought involved that many countries on that grand a scale. It was the first time that the whole world was involved in the same conflict. When it was over, they thought that there would never be another one like it. Unfortunately, they were wrong.

They really figured at the end of that war, that no one would ever want to fight another one. It was called great, because for the first time most of the world was involved in it.
How wrong they where.
