Ha! To the previous user.

Really this question depends on your social circle, and also where you live, to be honest. I live in the metro NYC area, and if I go to a wedding solo, I give either a check or gift equivalent to $175. If I go with my fiancee, we give $250.

Antoher good tip is to kind of track the couple's registry. Lots of times things go on sale in the months prior to their wedding, so you can get them a more expensive gift for a lot less $$. They'll never know! And if they do, they shouldn't care.

Good luck!

I too am from the North East and I agree with above. We usually try to cover the cost of our plates plus any additional person in our party (Say you and a date) Its not unusual to see check books on the tables filling them out after people have seen the spread.

BUT you should only give what you can afford. I know when my husband and I were poor we could only afford to give a small amount. And when we were married his cousin could only afford to give us $25, we didnt care, we were so touched that he would give us anything, he was in school and struggling and we didnt expect anything. Believe me, people will be so happy that you are there, it doesnt matter your check amount.

Don't think there is one. How much you are comfortable with should be fine....look at their gift registry at the stores to pick something in your price range....and how close is the person to you....that should be a factor....but you decide.

You would guesstimate how much they are spending per plate on the reception and give them accordingly...I don't go less than $100.

generally it is however much the bride and groom paid per plate, if there is two of you, then 2x the plate cost, etc. but who knows how much they paid without asking? so, we generally give $200 for family and close friends.

Put it on visa so that you can cancel the transaction once the relationship ends.
