seems like we shortchanged the effort there and we are heading for a 20-year involvement like our Russian predecessor

Its being dubbed "the forgotten war".
Nato has pretty much assumed control of the operation there, but we do have a large force there, and i have lost a few friends there, so please, dont forget about the soldiers there, no matter what country they are from.

We will likely be there alot shorter time, then the Russians. They fought their war for 10 years, they supplied the goverment with weapons, etc for about 15 years before that. What we are doing is way different from what the russians did there. We are trying to help the people rebuild, it's too bad that there are people over there taliban who don't want the changes. The regular people want us there. The biggest problem is that some of the other countries there, are not pulling their fair share.

remind me. why are we there in the first place? shouldn't we just leave those poor people in peace and stay at home a bit more?
There is lots of work to do here at home in USA.
We too need schools and hospitals and clinics and dams and roads and libraries Can we really afford to run around the world hammering on anyone who is not like us? maybe we should jsy set a good example and let them emulate us. So far we are doing a bad job of both example and of trying to force others. If we stayed away maybe they would not get angry and blow up our buildings?

What? You're saying that the war in Iraq isn't the best thing that happened to America since sliced cheese? How dare you?

Iraq is so important it makes failure in Afghanistan acceptable. Didn't you know that?

We aren't the only ones in Afghanistan. The Coalition in Afghanistan is rather quite large. I'm not concerned.

all countries that go there end up bogged down big time. i would not underestimate the fighting ability of a people who have nothing left and basically fight for rubble. since the americans showed up , opium production sky rocketed, how does that work

Yes, it sure does. Interesting sleight of hand we've had with Iraq taking our attention off Afghanistan, huh?
