this is my response, and i talk to a lot of school kids in mexico saying these things
also try to convince farmers not to plough ,not to use fertilizer ,to harvest water and plant diverse,
desertification is like a fire that grows once set in motion
also encourage people to reforrest to capture carbon and produce more humidity
and then there is the following story
in North Africa,India,Mexico ,millions of people are effected by land loss and desertification
in recent times thousands of people have died because of exessive heat, usually old people.in India ,Mexico and France,
deforestation causing desertification, the desert conditions causing very cold nights and scorching hot days
in china, thousands of what used to be farmers are running for their lives from the dust storms that have burried their towns and turned their lands into dessert, the globe where they were got to hot for them .
and instead of producing food they are now needing it from some where else, and they will drastically effect the world food prices when they start buying water in the form of grains ,at any cost destabalising governments, in some countries ,could be the result
(are you seeing more Chinese around interested in agricultural lands ,we do here in Mexico)
,the Sahara is growing by 7 kilometers a year
and all of the desserts we know are a results of mans actions ,and they are increasing ,not getting less ,in the dinosaurs days ,there were no desserts.
collectively this planet is drying up because of bad farming practices like, over grazing and fertilizers,
as far as the food production is concerned, Global warming or some of its effects are serious, rising seas result in landloss
each degree rise in temperature means 10%crop loss
more landloss because of desertification every year,we have less areble land to produce food ,for an extra 70 million people ,
and there is less and less water (because of deforestation),to irrigate this production ,
and there are less and less farmers to do it..
who are overpumping deep carbon aquifiers
who are plowing more and more unstable lands because they have lost so many million hectares to desertification ,
because of bad farming practises ,such as using fertilizers and heavy machinary or over grazing
RISING SEAS
The northpole is melting ,and we will know it without ice in our life times.
this does not affect the sea level because it is ice that is already in the water.but the melting ice from Green land and the south pole ,are another matter.
Global warming is in theory reversable, but it will mean global co operation between all countries ,and taking into account human nature and the world politics ,it is unlikely that this will happen,
At least not untill we are all in the middle of planetary disastres and it becomes a battle for the survival of humanity every where.
SOLUTIONS
if you want to help the planet ,plant a tree every week ,if everyone on the planet did we we would be able to reverse the destructive processes
reduce carbon emisions, and they are already working on that by alternative forms of energy and regulations on carbon producing materials, aerosol cans, burning rubbish, industrial chimneys, powerplants etc.
the capture of carbon and the production of water and assist the aquiferous manta.
the world bank pays large subsidies for reforrestation to capture carbon and the best tree for this is the Pawlonia
Waterharvesting projects ,such as millions of small dams.to redirect over ground waterflows from the rains into the ground to supply subteranian water supplies.
the protection of existing forrests.
stop building more highways, urban planning to include vegetation stop building cities encourage people to return to the land to conduct their business from there which now has become possible thanks to the internet.
education to motivate people to auto sufficiency by building more home food gardens.
education on environmental awareness
education on family planning to curb over´populaion
Agricultural education and improvements to follow the principals or sustainability and soil management.
more environmental or land ,design to prevent bush fires, such as--fire breaks
,more dams.regulations and control for public behaviour
alternative effeciant public transport to discourage the use of the internal conbustion engine
recicling wastes,limit water use

I didn't believe in it once. But this year I saw two things that have made me wonder. I once lived in tropical Australia where a particular weed called sida retusa was common. Also mud or potter wasps were common.
In 1990 I moved to Canberra, which is not tropical and is about 2000 feet high so has a much cooler climate. In the summer of 2006-2007 I have seen sida retusa and mud wasps in Canberra for the first time.
In 1976 I began analysing the air from underground coal mines in central Queensland, Australia, for mine safety purposes. I found that ordinary air then contained 320 parts per million (ppm) of carbon dioxide (0.032%). That was up from the 300ppm described in books published in the 1960s. By 1989 the CO2 in the air was over 360ppm, that was the last time I personally analysed air. It is now reported as 385ppm on average. That is a big increase in less than 40 years. So it must be having some effect.
Cloth supermarket bags won't help much but they can't do any harm. More damaging is the drive to the supermarket.

While the Earth does go through warming and cooling cycles, man is not the cause of it and if we weren't here it would still happen. Is the Earth warming? Maybe. Some say it is cooling. The far left can't seem to make up its mind. Either way, there really isn't anything you can do to stop it. As far as when it would happen, the global warming thing won't happen in your lifetime, so I wouldn't be so worried about it. As far as the cooling and the next ice age, there will be tell tale signs first. Like the Gulf steam coming to almost a dead stop. You have to remember that only about 1000 years ago the Earth had a mini ice age and we are in a warming trend from that. It is good to recycle and to try to be responsible for what we do to the Earth, but I wouldn't lose sleep over the climate of the Earth. It is going to do its cycle thing no matter what we as humans do. That is based on factual science and not from a far left wacko that is biased from the start. A lot of this outcry about global warming is from people that are very political and want to make money. There is even part of this group that actually hates mankind and wants to see the evil humans reduced to only 300 million. They are pretty much nuts.
Darlin, I don't know what they teach you in school these days, but you need to study the Earths history. It is funny how only the scientists that get certain grants are backing up this global warming scare. If they don't back it up, they lose their funding. There are many reknown scientists that do NOT rely on money from oil interests, or Fed. grants for global warming that oppose this big outcry. First of all, no matter what you do, there are still 3000 volcanoes on the surface of the Earth that are active. Compare the eruptions to the far left wacko data and you will see a correlation that they don't tell you about. It is good that you want to be a responsible person, but you are being lied to and the far left nut jobs take advantage of your being so naive in your youth. There is a lot that you just don't know. As far as cloth bags, it takes a lot of pollution to make those too. So now what? You also have to consider the effects the sun has on this planet. You have no power to stop that. The sun wreaks havoc with our atmosphere quite often, that too correlates with the data that the far left use, and they don't tell you about that either. Stop listening to idiots, and study for yourself. Don't believe everything you hear. You also have to consider this, the ocean filters and creates more air for you to breath than all of the trees in the world. Trees are good, but not the only thing that cleans the atmosphere. Also, oceanic, or deep sea volcanoes create pollution and there are thousands of active ones. And then you have the Great Rift in the Congo in Africa that creates pollution. If man wasn't here, it all would still happen. Greenland was green before the last mini ice age. Kentucky was covered with a glacier during the last great ice age. With out warming, no one would be living there now. Florida was covered with water not that long ago going by the Earth time frame. Be a responsible person, but please don't turn into a worry freak like the far left nut jobs.

The first thing you can do is ask your parents to replace at least 5 regular lightbulbs with the long lasting compact flourescent bulbs. If every house in America did that, the saved energy would be like removing 3 million cars from the road.
If you are truly worried about global warming, stop buying products made in countries that are destroying the earth (China). Buying products made in China does 3 things, 1-it costs Americans jobs, hundreds of thousands of job, 2-China is notorious for abusing child labor & their other employees and 3-China is destroying the earth faster than every other country in the world combined. They have already "killed" the Yangtze River & it's ecology and fauna, in the past ten years they have managed to kill off the remaining white dolphins in the river & now they are spewing so much pollution into the atmosphere that America & Europe could outlaw cars & trucks and the destruction of the earth could still happen.

This will not make any difference. Supermarket bags made of cloth are not the answer because all they will do is to make the guy who dreamed it up rich, and then HE will go out and buy gas guzzling SUVs, jet planes, diesel spewing buses, and the net result will be for the worse.
You have to think globally. The only way to reduce global warming.. the ONLY way, is to eliminate vast numbers of people on the planet. This would need to be on the order of wiping out two to three billion people, and the best way to do that would be through the use of some biological or chemical agent that can eliminate the entire populations of places like India and China.
So what you really need to be asking is "How can I urge our government to develop really effective methods for eliminating the entire populations of countries?"
Buying a 99c bag at a supermarket just is not going to cut the mustard, sorry.

Hi, and thank you for your legitimate concern about global warming. I agree with the one response that you should replace light bulbs with fluorescent ones (which will save money in the long run, too). My suggestion for you to make a difference is to plant trees. Trees (especially hardwoods) absorb Carbon Dioxide (the cause of global warming) from the air during photosynthesis and replace it with oxygen. One tree, in 40 years, will remove all the Carbon Dioxide released by a car driven 550 miles. Petition your city council to become a member of Tree City USA, a program the National Arbor Day Foundation has. And become a member yourself to help plant a better future.

Get the politics out of the equation and fund basic research. Computer models take about 3 months to run even on super computers and may need even more information (ocean capacity to absorb heat in the deeps?) to warrant shifting factory jobs to countries with even less restrictions. Plant trees (that absorb CO2 from the atmosphere by photosynthesis) and build long lasting wooden structures to keep the carbon tied up. Promote the production of ethanol from switchgrass (etc.) because it recycles the carbon in the atmosphere instead of adding to it by burning coal or oil. Recognize that use of alternative fuel (ethanol?) will not reduce the use of coal and oil which will merely become cheaper and find a market somewhere in the world, even countries with less restrictions. Stretch out the use of oil and coal until it is depleated or too expensive to mine relative to alternate fuels. People likely will not take fewer and shorter showers to save on fuel and reduce global warming or car pool to save on gas. Would you? And you are rightly concerned. Good luck.

You're worrying needlessly, and are going to blow a fuse and end up in a mental hospital. It bothers me that the "Global Warming" nuts are scaring our children because of something that isn't even factual. Your environmental concerns are admirable but will do nothing as far as global warming is concerned. Global warming ended this month, and we are now in our "cooling" stage, now go outside and throw some snowballs.

I've posted a long answer to this today, and I'm going to do an even longer blog on it, starting today. We need to use more solar, wind, wave and geothermal energy sources. Cut coal and oil use. Smaller cars, preferably electric.
