I had a root canal done Wednesday. I'm in more pain now then I was before the root canal was done. I've never had a root canal before, so I'm not sure if this is normal. I'm still very swollen and having to take 800 ibuprofen every 6 hours to keep the swelling under control. I'm also on vicodin. With both, I can barely chew on the opposite side of my mouth, and even closing my mouth all the way hurts because my teeth touch on the side that had the root canal.
If there are any dentists out there --- is this normal?
Please tell me how many days your recovery took after your root canal?

If you are touching this tooth, the one the root canal was preformed on, then you need to go back to the dentist and have it adjusted to take it out of occlusion. The swelling from the abscess makes the tooth "sit taller" in the socket and every time you touch your teeth together, it's "hitting" this tooth harder. This is keeping it even more irritated by bruising the ligaments and tissue that holds the tooth in the socket. It looks as if the dentist didn't reduce the occlusion enough or thought it wasn't necessary when it obviously is. Taking the tooth out of occlusion will reduce the pain and allow the tooth's abscess time to dissapate and the bruising to heal. You should also be taking an antibiotic to clean up the infection left from the abscess that your body isn't able to take care of, perhaps the dentist didn't think it was severe enough to negate the use of antibiotics. This is another reason why you have swelling, which is not normal. Swelling is usually reduced not increased. In the meantime continue with the Advil or Motrin at 800 mg but take it about 2-3 hours after taking the pain medication, it helps to prolong and intensify the effects of the medication and don't skip a dose even if it feels better. I would also call the dentist today and let him know so he can phone in a prescription and possibly see you today to reduce the occlusion. There won't be a charge for him to see you today either. Once it's done you will feel immediate relief. Try not to touch the tooth or close your teeth together at all until you can see the dentist. Eat foods that require no chewing at all, ice cream, smoothies, yougurt and oatmeal and such. I know your in a lot of pain and the doctor will understand, so call him today. If the root canal was just started you might have a build up of pressure. You need to call today and have the dentist take out the temperaty filling so the tooth can drain.

a root canal they kill the root, so you should not feel anything in that tooth, did you have an infection? did they put a temporary filling in it and you were supposed to go back and get a permanent one in it? you should not be in that much pain, I had a root canal done and was fine later that day.

the condition is acute periapical periodontitis,it takes at least 5 to 7 days to settle.visit your dentist to remove the trauma from occlusion immediately.medicament are ok

If it really keeps hurting in a day or so, go back to your dentist and tell him. hope you feel better.soon
