If there is a free service available, its probably not that great. With this kind of thing, you do get what you pay for. Instead, maybe you could ask some fellow students and see if you can use there computer? Or maybe they can loan you there copy and you can load it on your computer. Its a long shot, but it is worth a try.

Try the image editing program Paint.Net. It is free! It is alot better than Microsoft Paint.
Just go to download.com and search it.
