Would an upconverter make standard definition tv look better on a HDTV?

As I understand, standard def TV looks bad on HDTV. If I attach an upconverter between my digital tv box (standard def with some hi def channels) and a HDTV will it remove ghosting, jagged edges and other problems caused by playing standard definition tv on HDTVs? I know it improves output from DVDs but not sure about SD TV signal. The main reason I am asking is I that I'm trying to decide if I should get a standard def tv as I am not planning to get HDTV channels for a few years (too expensive here) and I dont want to watch a bad standard def picture on HDTV. Advantage of HDTV would be for my xbox 360 and watching HD-DVDs. If I could get standard def tv to look good (i.e. at least as good as SD tv) I would get a High def tv.

I would suggest a HDMI cable from your cable box to your TV.HDMI ports come standard on some sets but alot don't have them so make sure to look when purchasing a set.I have a Samsung 40 inch LCD HDTV and I too was put off by the way standard definition TV looked on my set.So I heard that HDMI cables improve the picture quality of standard definition.So I bought a Monster HDMI cable and it really improved the quality of standard definition signals.They are fairly expensive though.My cable cost me about 100 bucks at Best Buy.I have a Xbox 360 as well and the difference of quality is amazing on my HD set.SDTV just doesn't cut it in the new generation of gaming in my opinion.

EVERY HDTV has a built-in upconverter to convert SD signals to its native resolution. Unless you spend thousands on a Faroudja upconverting box, there is nothing much you can do. The TV-internal upconverters are pretty good, but there is so much you can do with a noisy analog signal.
If you have digital cable or satellite, HDTV should display SD TV with no major quality problems
