I suffer from depression and panic attacks, I have noticed that when i am having a bad day I just want to listen to loud music - at the moment Evanescence loudly works best on my moods. But i have noticed others with similar habits, I want to know what it is about this type of music that seems to help.

While this is purely opinion. I would say heavy moving music supercedes the emotional depression you feel. You are depressed so to compensate for that emotional state you inject your consciousness with a boost (moving heavy loud music) The music moves you when you are down.

I have depression and I do that too. I don't know why exactly, but I feel good when I listen to music I like and turn it up loud.

I'm the same way. I'm not sure why its that way but a lot of people I know with depression do it. I love Metallica when I'm really depressed. Especially the songs, One and Unforgiven. I suffer from Chronic Depression Recurrent.
