People who have faith, have a belief in prayer which is calming, and hope that their prayers will be answered. The power of the mind is phenomenal over the body and can improve health drastically on it's own. This is not meant to offend any one. I just want to know what is used in place of faith? People of faith have a sense of self worth, that a higher power watches over them and cares for them, so they can deal with depression often more quickly and without medication. Once again I do not want to offend anyone, I just want to hear your viewpoints.

I have faith - just not in your God.

I follow the Eight-fold Path as best I can; and live by the Five Precepts as best I can

You have to understand that we atheists can cope VERY much better with reality than those who rely on an imaginary entity ever can.
I have been a declared atheist for 53 years and I do NOT have a problem dealing with the real world, whatever problems come my way. I have my own abilities, the support of friends and family when needed and my mind is clear, free from all the garbage that accompanies belief in a fairy-tale figure.
If you have an open mind and wish to consider the optional lifestyle that atheism provides, try www.godisimaginary.com and seriously read it through. There is a lot to read. Those with a belief in something that does not exist could well benefit from my planting a seed of truth right here and now. It could be a life-changing experience for you IF you are able to open your mind. Can you?

Well, as someone who is currently lacking faith (I'm not proud to say it) dealing and coping with life is extremely hard! I feel that I am in a sort of depression now and although I could turn to God and ask for help I feel like I would be a hypocrite and that would be worse than asking. Beliefs for me are hard to sort out right now, I have conflicting view points and I don't think that there is just one way for everyone, I think you make your own path. I agree with your thought on it being hard I can attest to that, it's like your lost but you have hope that you will find your home. So I guess for me right now it is just if christianity is for me or not, it is the hardest, most life changing event in my life and if I weren't totally dedicated I would just go back to what I am comfortable with just becuase the journey is too hard. I have learned a lot about my self worth and alternative ways to cope like meditation, and talking through my problems with others.

I know that God will not give me more than I can handle. I take each thing as it comes. Stress and illness are a product of this sin-filled world. These are just other things for me to deal with. I pray for guidance and wisdom to handle each trial as I go and never loose faith that God is with me, watching over me so that I will be smarter and stronger for enduring whatever it was. God Bless

I agree that prayer can have those effects but prayer is not the only way in which to deal with life's hardhships. The fact that I rely on myself and other people for the support I need, as well as being that support for others fills me with a lot more "self worth" then relying on an imaginary deity. Even at it's hardest, life ain't so bad.

I have a sense of self-worth that needs no higher power - I am able to recognize and appreciate my own accomplishments. I cope with stress, illness and despair better now than I did when I was a believer. You see, I'm not waiting for some higher power to solve my problems. I do it myself, and it feels damned good.

Faith in a god is like taking a pain killer without treating the underlying symptoms.

I find the truth to be the complete opposite of what you state, those without a faith in god have a much greater sense of self-worth.

I draw on self reliance and belief in my own abilities to overcome any challenge. Imagine if there were a God-would I not have payed him the ultimate compliment?

By looking on the bright side and not on the bad side, such as the relaxation of knowing I don't have to follow a billion rules that are stated in the Bible like christians have to. WHOOP, THERE GOES MY STRESS DEALING WITH YOUR QUESTION. aaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
