This situation is called Somnambulism.
Somnambulism, also sleepwalking, dissociative mental state in which the individual rises from sleep, with little awareness of surroundings, to perform what appear to be conscious motor activities. Sleepwalkers commonly perform actions, such as looking for lost objects, that reflect stressful incidents from waking life. The condition is most frequent among adolescents, although adults may be affected as well. Electroencephalograph readings indicate that sleepwalking occurs during deep sleep, when dreams are absent.Sleepwalking, often accompanied by talking during sleep, rarely results in injury; if infrequent, it is not considered a sign of serious mental disorder.

Usually when you fall asleep there is a disconnect between your brain and your muscles which keeps you lying still in bed. Some people (myself included) sometimes lose this suppression and get out of bed and do things completely beyond their control (and usually their conscious awareness).
The reason this disconnect happens is hotly contested in neuroscience at the moment. To be perfectly honest, almost everythiing to do with sleep and dreaming is a complete mystery to the scientific community.

cause they do not get enough exercise while awake.
Jokes apart, it indicates a disturbed state of mind arising out of stress such as exams, change in sleeping-place etc mainly occurring in adolescence, in which the subconscious-mind takes over the motor functions of the body, directing it to move,to perform a set function without resulting in injury, most of the time.

Well, there's actually a neurotransmitter you produce when you go to sleep that blocks your muscles from getting signals from your brain. This is what's going on when you sometimes wake up and feel "paralyzed" and anxious. People that sleepwalk have a lower production of this neurotransmitter, so they "act out" their dreams...

That's somnambulism or sleepwalking. It's a state in which body is able to walk and perform other automatic tasks while consciousness is diminished. Often seen in anxious children. It is said to be unwise to awaken them as intense fear may be felt.
