Download Kazza lite codec pack, this includes almost all the codecs known to man.... It also comes with a cut down virsion of media player that works very well. Just Google the name to find where to download it. The current vision is 2.82 I think

I prefer Winamp myself, of the 7 or so players that I have tried. There is a free version and for enhanced cd ripping, a pro version that costs about 30.00 US. The ability to change skins can be fun, but unfortunately some of the available "add on" skins can be buggy.

Try VLC Media Player.I've been using it for quite some time and it plays many types of media files.
