Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand. So I would start there. Christchurch is quaint as well. It as a Victorian feel to it.
Queenstown is another city worth visiting. It is very pictoresque. They have a cool indoor putt putt centre called 'caddyshack mini golf'. It has themed holes with excellent attention to detail.
In Queenstown, you can go up the skyline gonola to see a beautiful view of the town, remarkables mountain range and Lake Wakatipu.
Queenstown is also the place for the worlds best pizza at a place called "the cow". Their signature pizza is the bolognese pizza.
Neighbouring Arrowtown is pretty as well. It is a small town that reminds you of how places were a long time ago. I like that it has kept its historical charm.
Dunedin is a college town but also very easy on the eye. It also has the world's steepest street.
I must say New Zealand is an outdoor country. It has spectacular scenery. It was used in Lord of the Rings. They have tours that take you to all the filming locations as well.

Unless you are interested in outdoor stuff, there really isnt a lot in NZ. Auckland would be the place you would most likely visit being the largest city, probably followed by Christchurch and lastly Wellington.
Nobody ever mentions it, but you should also be cautious about your personal safety here. Violence against tourists is unfortunately not uncommon. Just because it seems like a quiet little country doesn't mean it is a safe little country. Take the same precautions that you would in any foreign country - don't hang around isolated spots, don't hang around areas that nobody else seems to be, and be aware of what is going on around you.
Oh, and don't assume that because it is a tourist attraction that it is actually safe. A number of tourists have unfortunately been killed because they assumed the attraction operator had taken all precautions.

Our Automobile Association in NZ has recently completed a public opinion survey. Google their website 101 Must-dos for Kiwis. A high proportion of what a lot of NZers consider our top tourist attractions are down in the South Island where I live.

To be honest, the highlights in NZ are the scenery and related activities, so it probably isn't the ideal place if you're more interested in city life. Having said that, Wellington is definitely my favourite city. There's lots going on for people of all ages, so that would be my recommendation.

Well, that's why most people go to NZ. because they were in the neighbourhood, or more imortantly coming to Australia first.
Realistically, I'd skip the whole NZ thing. I mean, you're not into the outdoorsy stuff, which is all NZ has to offer. I'd bypass it altogether and spend more time in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, maybe even go up to Cairns. Or if you have the time of the money, go across to Perth. It's very lovely over there.

I would say go to wellington, stay indoors all day and pig out, lol.
They have have some great Bars or cafes there. Maybe a movie, or a visit to tepapa (an interactive muesium).
Or maybe the lazing around on the beach.

Hi,
If your not keen on the outdoors then you should check out Wellington's cafe scene. We have more cafe's per head of population than anywhere in the world!
Although it can be a bit windy as we say 'you can't beat Wellington on a good day'!
enjoy!
