I would say pretty rather than beautiful as a man probably would not like to be called pretty but beautiful would be more acceptable to describe both sexes.

Usually i use pretty. If i were talking to my 3 yr old i would say it in a kid way you look adorable. If we are talking a sexual way to my girlfriend, hot or sexy. For a possible older woman, maybe you could use eloquent. Not sure on that one.
