Basically, it was the first 'industrial war', where the classic forms of warfare, with people sitting on horses and prancing around betwixt big old -fashioned cannons and soldiers with badly-functioning rifles, was proved to be outdated. From WW1 on, war was fought between machines, and humans were just the actors pushing the buttons. This war first saw the use of airplanes, very, very heavy artillery, tanks, et cetera. Oh, and if I remember correctly, during WW1 it was the first time that armies were conscripted, but I don't know this for sure.

The consequence was that wars became less 'fluid' and more static: beforehand, bigger armies could easily get the upperhand, thus cities changed hands easily. During WW1, this didn't happen. What did happen was 'trench warfare', where even advancing your own line 20 meters was considered a huge success. Look up the battles of Verdun and at the Somme to get a description of the human meat-grinder that war became, or even better, look up the poems of Wilfred Owen.

All these developments were already foreshadowed in the Crimean War a few years earlier.

Aircraft, mobile armour, radio, submarine warfare. Showed that fortified frontiers were all but useless unless the fortifications ran the whole distance. Demonstration of movement of troops by motorised transport - look up the taxis of the Marne, when Paris taxis were used to move troops to the Marne river region which helped stop the German advance on Paris.

Trench warfare was not new - it was part of the US Civil War.

It introduced many new technological methods for killing. Such as chemical weapons, trench warfare, and tanks. The problem was that Europe was not prepared to deal with these new technologies.

Also it showed the problems with the spheres of influence method of maintaining peace by exposing its weaknesses. The secret and overlapping treaties inherent in the system of IR practiced at the time led to the war.
