While there are a lot of freeware Windows XP themes, be careful not to get so overjoyed that you found some that you agree to install the "Bundled" software that often comes along with it. Bundled software often includes a trojan, spyware or virus. Although you already said you didn't want a 3rd party program I'd still suggest "WindowBlinds" as it is a trusted source, offers a trial version, and isn't permanent if you don't like it.

If you have any photos on your computer you can use one of them,Go into control panel click display,Where it says themes click browse.
