I'm not sure where you're located, but you might try www.decoratingden.com. They advertise that they have interior decorators who will come to your home, (although that may be a limited offer if there are no decorators in your immediate area). Or you could just always check your local yellow pages.

Another good source for ideas is www.getdecorating.com. I don't know whether they have interior decorators that you may contact, but that website is chock full of pictures and information which may inspire you and save using a middle man.

If you do decide to do it yourself, here are a few tips which may save you the cost of hiring a professional:

First, select an inspiration piece. This may be a painting, a fabric, or some piece of memorabilia that is important to you. Whatever you choose, let this set the tone of the room, as far as color scheme and general mood goes.

Second, take your inspiration piece to a local paint store, like Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams, or Glidden paints. Go with the pros, don't look to the high school kid from hardware who happens to be working the paint counter at Lowe's or Home Depot. The professionals can help you select colors that will compliment your inspiration piece. (My favorite approach is to select a fabric, then select a paint color using the LEAST color in the pattern...for instance, I have a comforter with creams, rose, and just a touch of sage green . I used the sage green on my walls and in the accent colors (like throw pillows and lap throws), and the result is beautfiul!)

Third, remember to be consistent with the mood of the room while you're matching paints, selecting furniture and/or accessories. For instance, colors with gray undertones (called muted colors) are usually understated and elegant. Colors which are bright and springy are more "fun", light and airy (etc). Pictures, pillows, tabletop accessories and furniture styles should all reflect the general feel of a room. You wouldn't want to use sunny, wicker furniture in a room with a "heavy" victorian feel....or country accessories in a contemporary room. Again, let the professionals assist you free of charge. Sales people at the furniture store will help you find items that match the mood you're going for. Specialty shops and home interior stores usually have people who are trained to help you select accessories. Just take samples of your fabrics and paint colors with you. You can even contact the local lighting stores - they will usually send sales people out free of charge to recommend lighting options and the most strategic placement for your lighting.

Finally, just have fun! Whether you hire a professional or consult those around you who are there free of charge, enjoy every minute of it. Even if you have to back up three steps, rethink something and try again, it's all about enjoying the journey as well as the end results, so keep that in perspective as you go.

Good luck! Julie
