In linguistics, this process is, as you've siad called: Blending, bywhich new words are created from existing ones. Usually we can make new words from two words, mainly used in spoken English or written.
e.g.:motel= motor+ hotel.
smog= smoke+ fog.
oxbridge= oxford+ bridge
privateer= private+ volunteer.
