To me "pants" brings up images of y-fronts and other knickers.
The term "underpants" is a sort of hybrid that gets the idea across.

Trousers are pants in Australia, I prefer the word pants, in UK they call underware pants and it sounds so old fashioned and besides if something is "pants" it means crap so trousers should be called pants.

In Australia "pants" are unisex trousers ! Men wear suit pants, shirt & tie. Women pants & blouse. Jeans are jeans for either sex. Shorts are 1/4 length cut off jeans or sports shorts ...
Pants can be labelled by the material or length as well eg Cargo pants. Trousers are cheaper suit pants and often called trousers by the older generations.
Underpants as in the States are briefs, boxers or underwear and varies between the sexes and age groups. A man may also refer to them by label eg Calvins. (CK).
G's exist to but usually only socially acceptable for women, thank God !

For me trousers are trousers, pants are worn under trousers. I wear a vest next to my skin and not over my shirt. Superman has a lot to answer for - he wore his pants over his trousers (tights/panty-hose). Two nations divided by a common language!

Pants here in the USA are trousers and are full length. Jeans are just that Jeans full length.
Shorts are short legged trousers or Jean shorts.
Underwear is under shorts, under wear, boxers,
briefs etc.
Hope that helps

In the UK Pants are underwear but pants is an adjective used to describe very cheap and nasty things too. An example would be Man C,Charlton and West Ham are pants - (they are going down next season - referring to the football season) or perhaps more generically - small fluffy dice in the windscreen of your car is pants

What a fun question!
In the U.S., men call their underwear by several names: shorts, boxers, briefs or underpants.
Little girls call knickers "panties", and many women call them that, too, although they really should should stop doing that at the age of 12 or so, and call them "underpants".
Women here also seem to like a sort of underpants that have no backside, but only a narrow strip that rides between the butt cheeks (eeew), and these are called "thongs".
I've always been amused to hear our British cousins call them "pants"; there is so much opportunity for hilarious misunderstandings!

In the U.S. pants and slacks are the same as trousers.
Women wear "panties" under their pants and next to the thing that makes men pant.
Men wear boxers, briefs, or the new thing: boxer-briefs.
Children wear underpants.
Bikini Panties are worn by women and certain members of the Royal Family.
All in all, it is underwear that is under there.
