Because he has got you right where he wants you, he is the 'boss' and you have to do what he says! Don't know if you watch Dog Borstal (if you are in UK)? They had another Lab that did the same thing as your dog, what you have to do is get 2-3 small cups of water lined up ready and when he starts to howl you throw a cup of cold water in his face and at the same time you say 'NO' in a very firm voice, then you go back to bed, when he does it again you repeat the same thing, it will be a bit of a bu**er for you but it will have the desired effect, the Labrador on Dog Borstal only took twice to sort him out, his owner had the first full nights sleep in a long time!
Good Luck, let us know how you get on perhaps?
Having said this I am assuming by early that you mean 3-4am and that you don't consider 7am as early in which case 'shame on you' you should be up already and the dog in the garden for a wee! lol!

In any given situation, focus on what you do want your dog to do instead of on whatever he’s doing wrong. Learn how to train your dog https://tr.im/eNoWU

For example, suppose that on many evenings, your young dog gets busy looking for trouble just as you’re digesting your dinner. He grabs a boot from the mat by the front door and gallops through the house with it. You yell at him and take it away. He grabs its mate. You yell and take it away. He heads for the kitchen and starts checking out the counters in case something tasty’s been left behind. You chase him away. And on and on, until you’ve lost your temper and torn out clumps of hair you can ill afford to lose.

Remember dogs are pack animals he is calling you for company, going out for a walk is his way of getting you all to himself,so he must love you very much,we only have our belovied animals for a short time when you think of how long humans live,so being old your dog has learnt this is one way of getting your attention.Have you tried just going into the garden with him and sitting afterwards giving him a cuddle then going back to bed.It maybe annoying you now but when you haven't got him anymore you will really miss it,I now i lost one of my dogs in November last year,he used to keep pestering me for sweeties all the time, and if I'd ran out of his favourites he would pester me so much I'd have to go out and get some,i really miss that,so please take it as a complement that he wants to be with you.good luck.

That is your dog's way of getting your attention to take him for a walk so that he doesn't make a mess on your floor. After all, he has waited all night to go out...

Because he's learned that howling is your command to walk him, lol....let me guess, he walks way out in front of you and pulls you where he wants to go as well?

that might be his way of telling you: "Hey, i want to have a short walk... let's play at the beach." remember even animals have their own way of expressing what they want to do and how does they feel about something." understand their body movements and you will surely have a better companion with your dog.

He is trying to tell you that its walk time! you need to be strong and ignore it, wait until he stops (he should eventually!) and when you are ready take him for his walk, if you start walking him when HE wants he will not stop this.

Good Luck!
