What you call biscuits are what we call butter cookies or shortbread. Biscuits in the US are white bread, round, flaky yeast breads, the kind you would pour milk gravy over. They are considered a breakfast item, primarily. I don't know what the UK equivalent would be. I was actually kind of wondering what our "English muffin" meant in UK terms. They aren't the same thing as a "muffin", here (Muffins are a bit like cupcakes, the "English" version more of an airy, chewy bread).

American biscuits are like a round fluffy roll. Most popular in the southern states. What Brits call a biscuit, Americans call a cookie.

OUR biscuits are YOUR scones however, we also use the word "muffin" which also equals your scones on a different level.
Our Cookies are your biscuits. While visiting the UK the bakery looked at me soooooooo odd when I asked for cookies. : )

Most Americans know biscuits as the buttermilk variety. Which is made with flour, shortening, baking powder, salt and buttermilk. It is a Southern bread that is used for a main dinner or breakfast with gravy over them. In Northern areas it is used as a side with dinner or breakfast with jam. We have biscotti; which is a hard sweet bread, which is mainly sold at coffee shops that is served in the morning with coffee or tea; witch is probably the closet to your version.

I think they have something in the coffee shops called biscotti or something and it is hard and sweet so maybe those are like UK biscuits. normal biscuits are round soft things that have no flavor. You need to put honey or butter on them. another thing you can do with them is break them up and put them is soup.
