3 guys went to a restaurant to eat. A plate cost $10. After eating they gave the waiter $30, but then complain that being regular customers, they are entitled to a discount.

The waiter leaves to talk to the manager who tells him to give them a rebate of $5.

On the way back, the waiter figures that, $5 would be a bit difficult to share among the 3 guys, so he gives them back $3 and pockets $2.

The guys are happy and leave. To them, they each paid $9 for their meal, totalling $27 for the three of them. If you add the $2 pocketed by the waiter, the total comes to $29. Where is the remaining $1 ?

Heard this many times. You did the math wrong. $10+$10+$10=$30-5(2 to waiter and 3 to the guys) =$25, add the $2 waiter took and $3 to the guys. abracadabra. $30.

they paid $30....
MINUS $5= $25
$2 with the waiter...so $25+$3=$28
