These are the words of Jesus that he spoke to the thief on the cross.
Luke 23:43 Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, TODAY you will be with me in paradise."

This is a good question.
The Bible answers it.
When you die, you are 'sleeping' in the grave. You have no further part in any activities on earth - you are dead. You do not go to heaven or hell, because there has been no judgement at this point. There is no evidence in the Bible the tells us that we go to heaven when we die, which unfortunately is what many sincere Christians believe. Lazarus was not brought back from heaven to be resurrected from the dead on earth - he was sleeping in the tomb, when Jesus raised him up.
The truth is, that we sleep in the grave until the resurrection. Those who know Jesus will join him to go to heaven, and those who do not, will lie in the grave until the resurrection of the evil after the millenium when they will then be finally destroyed eternally.

Hi Mala, of all the theories that I have ever read or heard I have to side with the teaching of the Catholic church on this matter,it has defined this doctrine over hundreds of years and really seems to be the correct one.
After we have died the soul?spirit leaves the dead body and begins it`s journey back to God,and meets the risen Christ who then delivers a just and fair judgement on that soul, because of the stain of sin the soul cannot go into the presence of God and has to be purified,so it goes to Purgatory where it spends some time being cleansed, after this it is then deemed fit to enter Heaven.

I was raised to believe this is the case. But college and exposure to other beliefs have shaken my faith and confused my thinking such that I'm not sure what the truth is anymore. Most of the world is Buddist, then the next biggest group is Muslim. They have radically different views than do I.

I think the bottom line is no one knows the truth and won't know until they die.

Might be there is complete nothingness when you die.

Um well the Norse afterlife cosmology is a little more complex then your average religion. There's nine worlds each with many layers and places in them; in Asgard each God or Goddess has their own hall. Some souls are reborn, some go into oblivion, some reside in Asgard with the Gods, etc... In any case... there is no eternal damnation or fiery lakes and the Gods do not punish people for not worshiping them.

Personally I plan to be feasting and drinking with my ancestors and my Gods in Asgard.

I believe in karma and reincarnation, therefore I believe "where you go" depends on how advanced your consciousness is and whether or not you have transcended the passions of the mind. I believe that as long as you still have physical desires, you will continue to reincarnate to the physical plane where these desires can be nurtured. Once you become weary of the physical plane, (and it's "downfalls"), have transcended your physical desires and "died to the ego", you will ascend to the kingdom of heaven.
