Admission to a psychiatric unit is not offered lightly. It gives the body a chance to calm down. You will likely be prescribed sleeping tablets so you are sure of getting enough sleep when you are admitted. If you have an irregular sleep pattern, you are probably exhausted. The mind does not recover when the body is worn out.
you are usually asked to hand over all forms of communication,i.e.mobile phones. this is to remove any source of anxiety from your environment.
You will be fed well, nutrition is important; you will see a doctor on a daily basis. Usually , one to three weeks may be sufficient for healing to begin; after a few days, you may get permission to go for little walks, that sort of thing, if you like.
It's a cross between a hospital and a hotel; you wear your own clothes for example.
The thing is, when you get admitted to a psyc. unit, they generally have a policy of keeping you for a minimum of three days, even if you change your mind 5 minutes after admission; they might ask you to sign some sort of trust agreement, in which you say you won't ask to leave for three days; that's to establish trust between both parties. They trust you not to leave; you trust them to help you get better.
I think it's worth a try. Suicidal thoughts are no joke, and this is one thing you can't self treat.

Being admitted into hospital might have some negative stigma, but from the sounds of the question, you aren't suicidal all the time. Therefore, surely you must not like the feeling, and telling your doctor about it shows you want help. I think you should do what the doctor says. Anyway, since it sounds like its voluntary, you lose nothing by seeking professional help.

It might be a good idea if it's for a short while. Ask which hospital he suggests and find out what type of ward you'd be in. While you're feeling so down a caring environment, where other people deal with day to day events (like preparing meals) would be good for you. I don't know you personally, but I've successfully come through many years of serious depression in the past, including suicide attempts. The most helpful thing a doctor said to me was 'Do the things you like to do.' It made me ask myself, 'What do I like to do?' For whatever reasons we can be very hard on ourselves, trying to fit in, to achieve, to cope with everything. I found I'd been so busy with all those things that I'd never put my own needs first. Be nice to yourself. You do deserve it. I hope you find kindness. It may take a long time to turn your life around. I found it takes hundreds of tiny steps forward. Find people to talk to. I found counselling very helpful. I went for years, and eventually the root cause of my depression emerged, and I was able to move on. Put yourself first. You are important. Look for genuinely caring people and allow them to help you, but remember your right to decide where your life is going. Choose a nice route. You can find happiness, but it may be a long search. Remember too that not every day will be happy, but not every day will be wretched. Be nice to yourself. Good luck.

I am sorry you feel so bad, the only advice I would give if you do decide to go to hospital check all the medication they want to give you. They might provide a quick solution but can wreck your life.
Try and look at life's choices, we all have difficulties to overcome in life, some peoples far worse than others but don't dwell on the past, look at the value of life and choose to go forward with energy, positivity and determination. Take one day at a time, do things to make your life easier, and don't let negativity take over.

Why go to see a psychiatrist if you are no going to take his advice? If the psych thinks hospital treatment is the best thing for you you should give it a try. If you are a voluntary patient you can leave at any time.

If you are having suicidal thoughts at this moment you need to be seen immediately. Call a friend or family member, they need to be with you for support. Do you have a plan to kill yourself?? If so, go get help NOW. Get to the ER ASAP.

If you saw your psychiatrist last week and you are still feeling suicidal enough to ask it here now, I think you already know that you should accept the admission. Please don't wait until you are too suicidal to seek help.
