Every time I leave my apartment complex for more than 15 minutes, someone steals my parking spot, and it's so frustrating!! I live mainly at night because I work evening shift, so everyone is home asleep while I'm running around usually.
I've had to walk nearly a mile to park a few times, it really is a hindrance to my daily life, anyone have any suggestions?

sorry...if you live in an apartment complex with no assigned parking spots, then you are S.O.L. there is nothing "legal" you can do to keep your parking spot. If it is "assigned" parking..then go to your management office with the offending vehicle's information...Make, Model, Color and license plate number. I live in an apartment complex, and work the midnight shift. When I come home in the am..everybody is still home, not quite off to work yet. I pay $50 a month for a parking space in the underground garage so 1) feel safe when I leave in the middle of the night and 2) know for sure I will have a parking space when I get home and finally 3) don't have to worry about cleaning snow off my car or getting wet on a rainy day. Talk to your management office and see if something similar is available to you where you live.

I had this same problem when I was in an apartment complex. At that place I had a baby and it irritated me to no end that my ONLY spot was taken. I first went knocking door to door to see who owned that car. The first rule of thumb is, it's probably a guest, and they don't want to walk far to visit someone. I lived in a townhouse row so I would knock on the door of the person directly in front of my spot, most of the time I was right. When it got worse we were allowed and encouraged to have people towed, I did just that, I paid enough money to live there NOT to have someone take my spot. I know live in a duplex (a large house kind of cut in half) and we have 4 parking spots but no assigned. My direct next door neighbors take the further two spots and we take the nearest two spots. When someone took a spot of "ours" either her or I would leave a NICE note that said "Please reserve this spot for the houses the parking lot is attached to." For the most part THAT kind of note has worked. I know what you are going through and I hope you find the resolution that works for YOU.

Have a professional sign made up that says " POLICE PARKING ONLY" Or something along that line. If you have assigned parking check with the apt management. They should have a towing company you can call and get the offending car towed

Is it actually yours, or is it shared, or is it even just a space on the public highway you believe you are entitled to?

Assuming it is yours, it should be part of your property and included on your property deeds (or your country's legal equivalent). In which case, put up a bollard, fixed with a padlock. You can get them on eBay.

You may have to check that this is permitted if you are bound by a leasehold agreement.

I'd just try putting some cones in the spot or something... keep them in your trunk and then break them out when you want to go anywhere. But maybe this is illegal... but then again nobody will catch you the cones would just probably be removed.

This might not be a very fair thing to do, unless your personal safety is at stake. But you could carry a large orange cone in your trunk and leave it in your space when you leave. Then you put it back in your trunk when you're back.

Get a no parking sign and put it on that parking spot.
