I was glancing through my boxing library and decided to watch these two epic encounters. As I watched, a couple of questions came to mind and I would like to get your opinions. The following are the judges scorecards for the first Holyfield-Tyson bout;
Dalby Shirley (96-92), Frederico Vollmer (100-93), Jerry Roth (96-92) all for Holyfield. Vollmer's scoring of 100-93 for Holyfield obviously meant he gave Evander every round, which in itself is questionable. But, since he did, he would've had to give Mike 9pts for 8 rounds at the most, and 8pts for the two rounds that Mike was dropped (6th) and saved by the bell from going down (9th). Which gives me 100-88 for Holyfield (Mike 8rds x 9 + 2rds x 8 = 88). Maybe my math is shotty could someone clarify for me I'd appreciate it.

Rematch Question: During the chaos that Mike's outrageous "bite" created, Mills Lane on more than one occassion goes to the ringside apron and says "He (mike) is disqualified for biting Holyfield." Before a minute could go bye suddenly, Mills Lane changes from the original DQ to a 2pt deduction to Tyson. Anyone have an idea why he didn't stick with the DQ? If ever there was an act that deserved or warranted a DQ that "bite" was it in my opinion.

Second, because of Mills Lane's decision not to DQ Tyson, how would you have reacted/fealt if Mike suddenly came back and KO'd Evander to win the fight? I know I would have been one "p"d off boxing fan. Thanks

First off, thanks for a well written backgrounder of the Holyfield-Tyson match. I had the privilege of watching this and kinda disappointed on how things ended.

On the maths, you are right. But if a judge in boxing is allowed to call it even at 10-10, Vollmer's score is possible. Unless someone clarifies that.

Rematch Q1 -- A big heavyweight slugfest involves a lot of parties with major interests including the promoters, the governing body that is sanctioning the fight and the sponsors. We will never get to know why ref flipped flopped but my guess is that the powers that be could have overruled him during those chaotic moments.

Rematch Q2 -- I will file a class action suit against the promoters if the match turned in favour of Mike Tyson if I were in the audience. Obviously it was double whammy for Evander. And it would have been a disgrace and scandal for the paying public.

I'd have to assume you put some thought into this question. I would venture to guess that Vollmer scored 5 rds even ten to each fighter, the two 8pt rounds, and finally 3 rds of 9pts (Vander got 10 Mike got 9) and that would get Mike the 93.

I watched a program about this fight on ABC a few weeks after it happened. Mills Lane didn't really say why he changed his mind other than to say he had time to say to himself "OK hold on lets take a look at this for a second." (quote/unquote) I think the whole stigma of the event had him under a lot of pressure at that moment in the middle of the ring. From the time he says Mike is DQd to the time he says 2pt deduction he only talks to two people the commissioner and the doctor. Neither said much, however the look on the commissioners face seemed to be the catalyst that lead to Mills' change to the 2pt deduction. My view of it atleast. If that decision had cost Holyfield the title because he had to continue and eventually fell to a Mike KO punch, I would have went crazy. But, I believe Holy would petition the entire fiasco and I truly believe he would've got the belt back and the bout declared a No Decision/No Contest. I like these multi-part questions thanx

first, i didn't have the opportunity to review either of these fights before responding to this, so i am operating from memory and so i cannot speak to the scoring of the first fight. however, in the second fight - if memory serves - wasn't tyson winning the 3rd round before the bitings and the stoppage? he was extremely frustrated by holyfield's tactics/strategy in the first two rounds and came out smoking in the 3rd and was actually doing well until his meltdown. i would very much have liked to have seen the next round and seen these two guys, obviously pissed off at each other, just go in there and wing it. my thoughts,.....holyfield was so pissed at mike having bitten his ears that he wanted to go out there and knock him out, i remember him commenting between rounds...methinks this would have played right into mike's hands and not boded well for holyfield and mike might very much have knocked him out. holy's good, but only when he fights a well thought out, well planned, strategic fight...i give mike the edge in not only power but, chaos, anarchy, mayhem, and the unknown and so it's a shame that you readers didn't get a chance to see how this one would've played out. i say mike takes the rematch by solid knockout and get his revenge!!

Thanks for making us remember what happen in the fight between the referee and the judges in a boxing match you don,t know what will happen if the referee in the Tyson V Buster Douglas match would have started counting when Douglas hit the canvas Mike Tyson might still be undefeated it,s a shame that the judges and referees ruin great fights and fighters i.e Meldrick Taylor

the closest i've got ever gotten became while i became in common and walking homestead, I made the blunders of petting a doggy beside the line and it accompanied me homestead. mom and pa saved it till we stumbled on the owner, which became the subsequent day. i've got by no ability introduced a canine or animal homestead, making plans to maintain it even after my mom and dad have reported no although. If I did that, that they had probably have despatched me besides camp or some thing like that, and of path do away with the animal. uncertain what i'd do if my infants (if I actual have any) settle directly to drag some thing like that. they do no longer seem to be going to be rewarded for it, i'm able to inform you that plenty.
