What's the function of zip file?

I know one of the function is to compress file into smaller size, any others?

Password protected zip files encrypt files so u have to have the password to get them.

although zip format compresses the files on some basis that it replaces newline characters by some other with less values...and a lot of basics we need not to get into them... because every programmar may use diff techniques..
but they must be used wisely with the documents, texts etc. not with movies mp3s or voice like things.. because to compress them we need other encoders so that the comtent must not changed.. otherwise wt u will see and listen after compress a audio/video file.. no one can say...
we can use passwords to encrypt them.. they use some encryption algorythm like RSA, CRYPT etc.
also the one more format rar.. u can use that to compress and split a big sized file to smaller parts so they are easy to move on internet.
and many more uses...
