Hi,
The voltage supply in India is 240 Volts at 50 Hertz. How well would a electronic gadget (ex: digital camera with rechargeable battery) adapt to the voltage supply here ? do i have to buy accessories to use such items ? any backward or forward compatibility available with these devices ???

You have basically 2 problems; the plug adapter, and the voltage.

The plug adapter is easy - just get a cheap adapter kit and it will have plug adapters for the whole world.

The voltage:
First, check each and every device. You might find they work on any voltage!!! If so, you just use a plug adapter and you're done. A lot of camera rechargers are 110/220.

If not, here's the problem!

Sensitive devices, but low current (low wattage like 100 watt), you should use the transformer. It makes a 'smooth' waveform.

High wattage devices: Things like hair dryers use the high wattage converter. Funny thing is, it's usually lighter than the transformer! Here's the deal, it totally whacks the waveform. You shouldn't use it on sensitive devices.
