No, it is not.

Many houses have barred windows. In nice neighborhoods, robbery is a huge problem. In poor neighborhoods, murder is a huge problem. Children cannot play anywhere unattended. Preteens are approached by strangers regularly when just trying to walk to school. I know I sound paranoid, but I have witnessed all these events on a regular basis. Most of the U.S. is not this dangerous.

Los Angeles is just as safe as any other major city. You need to be smart and exercise common sense.

I am horrified at some of the things people have posted above. Everyone needs to just chill out and stop getting their statistics from Quentin Tarantino movies.

L M clearly has no idea what she's talking about. Her comment that "pre-teens are approached daily" is outrageously ignorant.

Dana5169 doesn't know what he's talking about either. The Eastside has some of L.A.'s best neighborhoods...Silverlake, Los Feliz, Eagle Rock and Mt. Washington (where the Mayor lives!)

The metro L. A. area includes some of the safest cities and areas in the United States and some not so safe...I think what people don't understand is the TOTALLY massive size of metro L.A.---As a COUNTRY-- It would be in the top echelon of biggest countries ( say maybe top 2 dozen). There are 88 cities in the L.A. county alone and used to be a dozen more but for consolidations....You can find your niche here if you really want to...and I am sure you will. Good Luck

Is your question about the CITY of Los Angeles, or the COUNTY of Los Angeles and its 55 Incorporated cities? The answer to both is: Los Angeles is just like any other large city. There are areas where it is relatively safe, and there are areas that are not as safe.

Why would anyone want to move to the LA area...If you like bad air, stuck in traffic almost every day, rude drivers, carjackers, freeway chases,no stars, possible earthquakes,no rain to clean everything up,billions of people, millions of illegals(not racist, but truthful)by all means move to So cal.....You may not know but there is some real beauty and air you can breathe in the Northern part of the state!!! I left S.cal in 1984 and was the best thing I have ever done(almost)

Beverly Hill is very pricey to live, you can afford that? if you can afford to live in that cities then you can probably can live any where in L.A. Beverly Hill isn't that safe consider such high pricey area, does had very good school but not the best school in L.A. You might wante dto consider like San Marino, very close to Pasadena Old Town, has one of the lowest crime and best school in the region.

I never think about crime acts at all. L.A has more cops than any other city on earth.
Most city crime is gang against gang and you don't live in gang infested areas.
TV makes all big cities look like hell holes.
I thought the same thing about new york from watching kojack.
