it is generally cheaper in Australia. Not HEAPS cheap, but maybe 20% cheaper...??? something like that.
What you can buy for 1 pound you can buy for $2 in Australia....
No-one can answer that question certainly though.

What type of holiday are you expecting? If you are a backpacker and stay in dorm rooms in hostels the ammount you need would be different than if you stay in hotels and go to fancy restraunts.

Is Australia Expensive To Visit

From what I have heard it is quiet a bit cheaper, take away and accomodation is a fair bit cheaper, Australia (like the rest of the world) will try and rip off tourists as much as possible.
You don't need to tip in Australia like you do in the US, so that will save a bit of money.
Seriously, a month in Australia - you won't see half as much as you would think as Australia is a lot bigger than expected. If you are only looking at staying in Australia for a month I would only really choose a few places to go, say for example, fly into Sydney, stay maybe 3 nights there and look around shop ect (Sydney would be the most expensive), then fly to Melbourne (flights aren't too badly priced) maybe spend a week in Melbourne get a hire car. While in Melbourne choose a few things that you want to do (ie Yarra Valley winerys are close to Melbourne and the Dandenong Ranges, plus Healesville Santaury, a couple of nights in the city and then maybe drive out to Ballarat or Bendigo for a bit of History) - then you could fly out (or boat) to Tasmania for maybe two or three nights (Hobart is nice and so id Port Arthur). From Tasmania you could then decide if you want to go to either Brisbane (very similar to Melbourne and Sydney but nicer weather - Melb & Syd are better), or to Darwin and Alice Springs (the outback) either one say a week there to look around and then back to Sydney for a few days to finish the holiday before flying out.
How much money - AUS$5000 would make for a good holiday add more if you have kids.

You have to take into account the exchange rate between the Australian dollars and the USDs. I was watching Top Gear Australia the other day, and I can see that it seems cars cost more money. I'm not sure the exact exchange rate, so you may want to look that up. It's not that it's more expensive in Australia, it's the exchange rate. Although, you may also want to consider the fact that it does cost money to ship cars around the world, so that may have a slight effect on cost. I live in America and watch both versions of Top Gear: the original and the Australian version. This may explain things... Hope this helps, and have a safe move!

Australia is very nice place to visit and, barring Sydney, most other cities and places are 20-25 percent less expensive than Europe or US. The most interesting places to visit would be Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra, Cairns. Your Sydney operator would make your tour program as per your areas of interest of side trips. It is actually the kind of hotel stay you choose that makes all the difference in your total budget. And bear in mind Australia is a big country so don't try to cover all. Choose fewer places and enjoy to the hilt. US$3-5K per person should suffice traveling as couple. I traveled only mid way up to India for personal and family consideration. It made sense for me to have chosen Affordable Dental Treatment and Tourism in India and came back smiling with improved oral health.

I live in Australia now but am still spending my pounds, and it's nice and cheap compared with the UK. But my daughter's father, who comes from the US, spent his whole holiday in Australia complaining how expensive everything was. I suppose this shows that the pound is very strong at the moment and the US dollar very weak.
