they used this card at atms. I know that they have cameras @ atms. how long do they generally store images of people making atm transactions?

Unless the police believe the person that did this is a part of a much larger criminal enterprise, it's unlikely that the police will really do much of an investigation.

That said, file a police report anyway...you'll need it as you deal with trying to clear your name with creditors. You also need to contact the credit bureaus and put a fraud block on your social security number, and pull a copy of your report from annualcreditreport.com (this is a free site that the government set up, in part for this reason). Use the site to find out how many accounts the thief may have set up. From there, call and write letters (trail of paper helps) telling them you never authorized the account.

If you happen to have a bank that has an identity theft program (such as Citibank's Identity Theft Solutions), contact them, too.

The images at ATMs are stored for about 5 years, unless there is a court order or something to retain them longer.
