The 1st of August 1990, Iraq attacked Kuwait. In less than a day, Iraq controlled the whole country. The United Nations reacted very quickly to this. The US tried to get Saddam Hussein (dictator of Iraq) out of Kuwait. Instead Saddam Hussein reinforced his defence. Prime Minister Brian Mulroney decided that Canada would participate in the UN coalition. On August 11th, Canada started of by contributing two destroyers and a supply ship. These Ships were old and needed fixing up.

The United Nations declares, for only the third time in its history, that force will be used against Iraq. All shipping in and out of Iraq will be stopped in an attempt to ruin Iraq's economy. Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein holds a news conference saying that an American invasion would bring "deadly consequence."

On Aug. 10, 1990, Prime Minister Brian Mulroney condemned Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein as a "criminal of historic significance." Without first seeking Parliament's approval, Mulroney announced that Canada will send the destroyers HMCS Athabaskan and Terra Nova and the supply ship HMCS Protecteur. Liberal opposition leader Jean Chrétien criticized Mulroney and called the move "absolutely unacceptable."

"If Canada had stood aside we would have betrayed our own national interests, repudiated our own responsibilities and dishonoured our own traditions. Canada did not stand aside in two World Wars and Korea. Canada did not stand aside to the hard work of seeking a peaceful end to the Iraqi occupation of Kuwait and Mr. Speaker, Canada is not standing aside tonight from giving effect to the United Nations resolutions in the Persian Gulf." — Prime Minister Brian Mulroney

In 1990 it was a UN movement and sanctioned war and there were many participants including Canada. As apposed to the current war in Iraq which is a USA lead coalition of "the willing" with no UN support. It is one hostile nation against another.
