If you don't go to the shop, you feel restless. And even though you go to the shop for a pre-planned purchase, once you go inside, you forget all the plans and go berserk. When you come home and esp. when the bill comes, you feel so guilty.
I hope I have given enough description of a compulsive shopper. There are of course variations. Some people have specific weaknesses for food items, some only for chcololates, some for cosmetics, some for clothes, some for shoes and so on. Some don't have such well defined preferences but go on a shopping spree when ever they go to the shop.
How to prevent such compulsive behaviors? OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) is a psychological problem and needs treatment. The options are many. Main stream medicines, alternatives like Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Bach flowers, Reiki and many more. The causes are deep-rooted and psycho-analysis may help.

There is No such thing as a shopping addiction. Some people may have shopping related compulsions, or may have very poor impulse control. You can tell that you have a problem with shopping too much if you Think you have a problem with shopping or if you spend a great deal of money on it.
There is no prevention for it since it isn't a real condition.
