All shades and tints of a color have their own meaning and significance as do scents. Black is often used for banishing negativity and for protection from dark energy. Red often signifies ones basic needs and wants, such as survival, sex and romantic love. Combine the two colors (black and red) and the energetic meaning would be protection of ones relationship from someone trying to break it up or to protect ones sexual and procreative rights such as the right to say no to sex and the right to say yes to an abortion. If one feels vulnerable in one of these areas, then burning a dark red candle is an appropriate way to send the type of protective energy one needs into the Universe.
As far as scents are concerned, as long as the scent seems to signify the same type of energy to you as the candle color does, then it is appropriate. I would say that in the case of dark red, it should probably have a sent that is rich and invokes feelings of power, safety or sensuality. If black cherry does that for you, then go with.
Remember that color and scent meaning can be a very personal thing. Even though my use of color and scent is based on many years of training and experience, if it does not line up with what feels right to you, then it is best to go with your own intuition.

All candles have significance depending on what they are used for. Magic is in the everyday. Lighting candles for a romantic dinner sets the mood, which is a kinda magic unto itself. Black candles are power candles and increase the intensity of the spell as it draws energy to it as black attracts all colours into itself. Red, whatever colour or smell, is usually used for work spell casting or sometimes Love. However, you can't make someone Love you, it impedes on their free will. Blue is for healing. Green for money. Etc. In some books about Wicca there should be better answers about this. However, I believe it doesn't necessarily matter the colour of the candle, but it is the intent with which it is being used that is most important. So if you are not into spell casting don't worry about it. And enjoy your candle light. : )

No. Black is black, and red is red. If you aren't doing spellwork, what's the color matter?
I use candles a lot in spell work, and personally, for all energies, I avoid scents unless they correspond to what I'm doing.

Dark colored candle will absorb more light than lighter colors and thus will throw off less illumination. They'll be a bit darker. Scented candles will have a scent.
I hope that helps. I bet you could have figured this out all by yourself if you tried.

Pure colors (not just dark, but actual attempts at black [no body can see REAL black]) evoke certain elements of the psyche and are useful. So not use fragrant candles as they are just gross. Use oils and herbs for fragrance... There you have 3 elemental weapons... color (vision), fire, and olfactory. Tools.

I think what really matters is what the candle color means to you-what kinds of emotions or whatever it draws from you.
