Shouldn't "God's word" be free?

Well, the Gideons do give them out free. But my "skeptic" friend had a great question. Would one of those big Bible / Christian book stores call the police if you stole a stack of Bibles? Only one way to find out.

Does God get royalties from the sale?

I feel bad my question didn't answer your question, so I looked it up. between 15 and 30 for a paperback and any price above that for custom. The below link is for a store that sells at least 16 different versions of the bible, 16! So much for the only word of God.

I think you can pay any amount you want--some hotel still have Gideon Bibles in their drawer that you can help yourself to and you can even have one handmade one encrusted with diamonds. There are collector bibles that you can spend a fortune on. But none are of any use at all unless you really study it and any other great body of literature you can lay your hands one. The biggest cost to you would be time. Many would give you a bible if you ask. I am sure you could find one at your local library.

You can get free ones from many churches simply by calling them and asking for one. Your best bets for free ones are the Mormons (King James, and they will insist on giving you a copy of the Book of Mormon, too) or the Baptists (King James) or the Jehovah's Witnesses (New World Translation, questionable at best).

Bookstores sell them, depending on the quality they range from a couple of bucks to a hundred dollars or more.

Yes,it would be wonderful if all Christian bookstores gave Bibles away for free. But non-Christian bookstores want to make a buck out of selling them, and they would never give up an opportunity for a sale.
There are many places that give Bibles away for free (for instance, the Gideons).

well if you can't afford one you can get a free Bible from a church, but we all need to make a living even those who sell Bibles.
