They can certainly contribute to it.
Soft drinks are high in sugar and have no redeeming nutritional value whatsoever. Combined with a generally poor diet and a slothful lifestyle, drinking a lot of soft drinks will lead to obesity.

Yes, without a doubt...even "diet" ones (though they may contain no calories), because they raise seratonin levels for a couple of hours a pop. They also rot your teeth out of your head. I know this first-hand.
There again, all things in moderation. I drank too many for a long time and am paying with dental bills and pain. Having anything now and then doesn't make you fat or your teeth fall out.

Yes they can if they have sugar in them and you are drinking a lot of them. However its more likely to be caused by overeating all food groups, not just one.

I dropped soft drinks from my diet (switched to water, fruit juice, etc.) and lost 10lbs in less than a year...Every little bit helps if your goal is to lose weight.

Of course, if you drink too many of them, they have too much sugar and calories. Try drinking diet sodas, or even better, drink natural juices and lots of water.

Not all on their own.
In combination with a sedentary lifestyle and other poor dietary choices, or with medical conditions like insulin resistance or hypothyroidism, yes. They can help.
