... or is it simply that they like the taste of those particular wines? Wine snobs drive me crazy, insisting they are more refined or worldy or sophisticated. Perhaps enjoying FEWER wines means your palette is more sophisticated. What do YOU think? Thanks for answering...

I agree that when one hears the words wine and sophisticated in the same sentence all you want to do is yawn.
Drinking wine is all about what you like and drinking wine-trying out ones you haven't tried before is fun and interesting.
Wine is no different to food-music -literature in that it is subjective.Just as one person will like sugar in their coffee and another just can't understand how anyone can drink sweet coffee-so it is with wine -or should be .It's a matter of personal taste and there are no rights or wrongs.
A wine snob will tell you that it is wrong to drink red wine with fish.In fact strong tasting or the meatier types of fish (tuna, swordfish etxc) can be washed down very nicely thank you with a decent bottle of the red plonk-but only if that's what you fancy. And if you don't then that's fine too.
It's your palate not theirs that's important.

Indeed yes. Some people do have a sophisticated palate. It's a matter of experience and training actually. This, however, does not mean that they always drink expensive wines. Some wines with tolerable prices can also be quite good. The main point is to understand about grape varieties and regions, and what aromas and tastes come out of a specific wine. For example Cabernet Sauvignon usually has a bitter, peppery taste, while Merlot is rather mellow compared to it. There are thousands of websites about wine producing and wine drinking. If you read a little bit, you will start getting the gist of "knowing about" some wines. I am sure you will enjoy learning and you will know what kind of wine to choose for specific meals.

I don't know that it's about having a more sophisticated palette or not but if you enjoy a wide variety of wines this will give you a lot more options when you are pairing wines with foods. To me this is the most important aspect of drinking wine.

A more sophisticated palate means being able to distinguish between qualities of similar wines (especially when differences are so small that "ordinary" people wouldn't notice). Drinking or liking a large variety of wines has nothing to do with it, and someone with a wide range of tastes is probably less likely to be sophisticated, but real wine experts can do both.

Wine appreciation isn't snobbish...a pathetic few ruin it for the rest of us. First, drink what you like. Whether it's a $9 jug or a $50 bottle.Wine is about the experience, the taste...what you taste. It's not a go out and get smashed beverage. It's meant to go with food...in doing so there are so many grapes that yield so many different tastes that the results are incredible. Typically someone who enjoys the different types can be referred to as someone with a more developed palate, not more sophisticated....thats assuming a whole lot about the person.

What is a sophisticated palette anyway? I love a large variety of wines, but you can also find me drinkin some miller lite, or some other cheap *** beer. So maybe I have a sophisticated wine palatte but a low beer one? Personally, most people that are wine snobs are better at spiting BS than they are at drinking wine.
