Cutting is an unhealthy coping mechanism. This means that the people who do it have not developed healthy ways of dealing with strong emotions, intense pressure, or upsetting relationship problems.

People who cut or self-injure sometimes have other mental health problems that contribute to their emotional tension. Cutting is sometimes (but not always) associated with depression, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, obsessive thinking, or compulsive behaviors. It can also be a sign of mental health problems that cause people to have trouble controlling their impulses or to take unnecessary risks. Some people who cut themselves have problems with drug or alcohol abuse.

Some people who cut have had a traumatic experience, such as living through abuse, violence, or a disaster. Self-injury may feel like a way of "waking up" from a sense of numbness after a traumatic experience. Or it may be a way of reinflicting the pain they went through, expressing anger over it, or trying to get control of it.

I would seek counseling

:( Is this girl your daughter? There is no "disorder" there is nothing wrong with her and nothing mentaly unsound. It could be anything from stress to anger to depression. Or even peer pressure. Or even a fad. Some girls think it makes them seem more powerfull if they can hurt themselfs. Some girls want attention. I'd need to know more about the spefic person to know what its really about but in my case it was depression and anger. The last thing a girl needs when shes cutting is an angry partent. Remember, she feels bad enough that she would do this to herself. Feel free to e-mail or P.M me.
I hope im helpfull

Self-injury (SI) or Self-harm (SH) is deliberate injury inflicted by a person upon his or her own body. Some scholars use more technical definitions related to specific aspects of this behavior. These acts may be aimed at relieving otherwise unbearable emotions, sensations of unreality and numbness. Self-injury is generally considered a social taboo. It is listed in the DSM-IV-TR as a symptom of borderline personality disorder and is sometimes associated with mental illness, a history of trauma and abuse, eating disorders, or mental traits such as low self-esteem or perfectionism. There is a positive statistical correlation between self-injury and emotional abuse.[1] [2]

Cutting or self-injury is a negative coping skill that is used primarily by girls who have not been able to develop more positive coping skills for one reason or another.

It is associated with many common disorders such as depression, bi-polar, borderline personality disorder, obsessive-compulsive.

More information can be obtained by searching the Internet under "self-injury" or "cutting."

Without getting into the whole realm of labelers, a person who cuts themselves is generally in a state of intense pain that manifests as psychic numbness. It is often the result of post-traumatic stress. The cut will provide a physical sensation that allows for some release of the psychological pain. You know how it hurts momentarily when the dentist drains the abcess-- similar idea.

I usually suggest that people check out the energy therapy called Emotional Freedom Technique... it gives the cutter (and family) a way to let go of the interfering negative emotions and get to the core issue, to eliminate it. This isn't a specific disorder, it may be linked to many. The answer you're likely to get is Borderline Personality Disorder, but that is a complex diagnosis that depends on a lot of criteria. A diagnosis can only be made by a trained and licensed professional. But anyone with self-mutilating tendencies should seek help immediately, regardless of what disorder it's symptomatic of.

Injuring yourself on purpose by making scratches or cuts on your body with a sharp object enough to break the skin and make it bleed is called cutting. Cutting is a type of self-injury, or SI. Cutting is more common among girls, but guys sometimes self-injure, too. People may cut themselves on their wrists, arms, legs, or bellies. Some people self-injure by burning their skin with the end of a cigarette or lighted match.

If you want to know more about it,search the Internet under cutting....
