Do you mean that they actually could not put a nozzle in the filler cap and squeeze the leaver? Maybe they had problems opening the filler cap, I know that I have had problems with these on occasion and being an engineer I do find that embarrassing.
Maybe it had an LPG conversion and did not require petrol, or was a diesel car (putting petrol in that would not be good my friend).
Instead of being critical if you see a lady struggling offer some help and make petrol forecourts a happier place.

My wife filled the car up and wanted a certain amount in pounds. She watched the wrong dial and then did not have sufficient money to pay for it. She phone me from the garage and I had to get a 30 minute bus ride and a 10 minute walk to get to he as they would not let her go. She has never ever done it again.

That was very funny.
The women drivers that really annoy me are those who stay in the car and send their men(?) out to fill up and pay for the fuel. I believe that these women normally have their men castrated as soon as they have sufficient children.
