Hey, how are you doing.....
Why do you care so much? I didn't talk to my real father for 19 years and when I did, I WROTE WHATEVER I FELT LIKE!!!! He wrote back, now we haven't talked for over 10 years after seeing him. I don't feel bad, it is just the way it is. Don't over-analyze so much. Just be yourself and it will all work out. I have three kids and a husband I love VERY much, and he (my "dad") doesn't matter so much now that I am older!

If you provide more information you might get better advice.
But, recognize that your dad is just another human being trying to survive in the world. If you are lucky, he will be happy and thrilled to hear from you. If not, you might be greeted with indifference.
So just be yourself. You have nothing to prove. At the moment you have no relationship with him at all. You are offering him the possibility of contact with you, so keep it simple and let him make the move that is right for him.
Don't take it personally if it goes bad. If it does go bad, rest assured it is not about you. Don't take it on yourself. Hopefully, he is emotionally healthy and will welcome your letter, and make the next steps easier. I wish you luck on that possibility.
Myself, I'm a dad of kids I haven't seen in over 6 years. It is a personal agony I carry with me every moment of every day. Wish I could change things but I cannot. I only hope my kids are as brave as you and will one day try to contact me.

Where were you?
That's what I want to say to my dad. I barely ever see him, and when he's there, all he does is read the news, work on his computer, check stocks, and business crap. I used to feel that I know him, but now he seems like a stranger that for some reason provides his family with money, but no love.
